Using GPS with Google Maps

Your phone comes equipped with GPS allowing you to accurately pinpoint your location. When used with Google Maps, you can view your current location on a map of your surrounding area and get directions to places of interest.

Enabling GPS

You must enable GPS before you can determine your location in Google Maps. Using GPS requires more battery power, so it is recommended to enable it only when needed.

  1. Press HOME > MENU, and then tap Settings > Location.
  2. Select the Enable GPS satellites check box to turn on GPS.

You can also quickly enable or disable GPS directly from the Home screen by using the GPS widget.

You can add the GPS widget by following the instructions in Personalizing Your Home Screen: Widgets.

Getting directions to a place of interest

You can find your current location with GPS and then get directions to an address or place of interest using Google Maps. You must be connected to the Internet to use Google Maps, and have a clear view of the sky for GPS to accurately determine your location.

  1. Press HOME, and then tap the All Programs button.
  2. Tap Google Maps.
  3. Press MENU and then tap My Location. Your location is displayed on the map as a flashing blue dot.
  4. Press MENU and then tap Directions. A search box appears with your current location already entered in the Start point text box.
  5. Enter an address or place of interest in the End point text box.

You can also choose the address of one of your contacts or manually select a point on the map as your destination. Tap the button to the right of the End point text box, and then choose the destination type:
    • Contacts. Tap a contact to insert that person’s address into the End point text box. Only contacts with address information will be shown in the contact list.
    • Point on map. Tap the location on the map you want to go to, and then tap Tap to select this point.
  6. Tap the Driving, Public transit, or Walking button to choose the way you want to travel to your destination.
  7. Tap Go to perform a search and get a list of directions to your destination. If there are multiple search results for your destination, you are prompted to choose the one you want from a list.
  8. Press MENU and then tap Show on map to see the route to your destination on the map. Tap the left or right arrow buttons at the bottom of the screen to view each separate instruction for getting to your destination.
  9. Travel to your destination using your location and destination markers as guides. As you move, the flashing blue dot on the map will move along with you to constantly show your current location. You can view more or less detail about your surrounding area by tapping the zoom-in and zoom-out buttons in the lower-left corner of the screen.
